The Brazilian Aluminum Association - ABAL - was founded
on May 15th, 1970 by Alcan Alumínio do Brasil Ltda,
Alcominas (currently Alcoa Alumínio S.A.) and Companhia
Brasileira de Alumínio - CBA (primary aluminum producing
companies), as well as by the processing companies Aisa
Alumínio Indústria Ltda, Asa Alumínio
S.A. Extrusão e Laminação and Kaiser
Alumínio do Brasil S.A. Aisa and Asa were merged
with Alcoa Alumínio S.A in the beginning of the
1980's.
Then, a common forum for the discussion of subjects pertaining
to the aluminum industry was installed. The forum viewed
to the reconciliation of interests between producers and
processors and the expansion of the industry's representativeness
before the government and the community related to this
industry.
ABAL joins 68 member companies, which represent 100% of primary aluminum producers.
Also part of Abal are the aluminum processing companies - which represent around
80% of the Brazilian domestic consumption - consumers of aluminum products, raw
material suppliers, service suppliers and traders.
The Association works through Work Committees and Sector Groups to develop
its activities and to meet its major challenges, among which are: competitiveness,
dissemination of aluminum applications and incentives to its new applications,
the consolidation of the industry's economic interests as well as the representation
of these interest before government agencies, and care for the institutional
image and of the product "aluminum".
