Responsible operations begin internally, by means of people management policies and programs that guide actions focused on quality of life, education and training, among other priority aspects for the aluminum industry companies in Brazil.

Responsible for the generation of approximately 50,000 direct jobs, 350 thousand indirect jobs, investments in the order of US$ 600 million and for the payment of taxes in the order of US$ 1.2 billion in 2004, the Brazilian Aluminum Industry is committed to its employees' health and safety, by adopting international standards for risk protection and evaluation, always in search of reducing the number of accidents and their seriousness.

The Brazilian aluminum industry, a worldwide benchmark, reached undeniable success in the prevention programs adopted by companies. In the last eight years, the total number of work accidents in the Brazilian aluminum industry dropped from 4,795, in 1995, to 873 in 2004 and the average frequency rate of accidents with absence from work dropped from 10.26 to 5.08 in the same period, pointing out to a significant drop in the ratio between the number of accidents per million of worked hours.

Frequency rate of accidents involving lost time
In the safety and health área, the significant decline
of accidents with days lost shows the efficiency of
prevention programs adopted by the industry.

Considering only the mining, refinery and primary/integrated industries, that Brazilian rate was only 1.23 in 2004, lower the world average of 2.0% (basis 2004), according to data from the International Aluminium Institute (IAI).

All primary aluminum units in Brazil are certified to standard ISO 14001 (Environmental Management) and to OHSAS 18000 (Safety and Health) and some are also already certified to SA 8000 (Social Responsibility).

Currently, large companies have already been certified to the integrated management of the health and safety, environment, quality and social responsibility systems.
