Over 70% of the global primary aluminum production are represented
at the International Aluminium Institute - IAI, an entity located
in England (www.world-aluminium.org).
In 2003, the Institute launched the program "Aluminum for Future Generations" with
the purpose of showing society at large, in a transparent way,
the challenges and actions of the industry regarding the economic,
social and environmental aspects of its activities.
The program
is ambitious and new, designed to focus on the concerns of the
aluminum industry related to sustainable development in all countries
where it operates and where its products are used. The initiative
combines the knowledge and qualification of its member companies
to establish primary aluminum global performance improvement goals,
thus ensuring its sustainability. This action is supported by ABAL,
the Brazilian Aluminum Association, which, since
its inception has encouraged effective actions for the development of economic,
social-cultural and environmental standards in its scope of activities.
The
initiative establishes 8 voluntary ambitious goals for the aluminum
industry worldwide. Six of them will be due in 2010. They view to reduce
environmental impacts, maintain production growth and ensure good work conditions
to employees. Among the subjects approached in the voluntary goals are: efficiency
in the use of raw materials, emission of pollutant gases, aluminum recycling,
health care and safety of employees and of communities, in addition to expansion
of standards and Corporate Governance practices. The aluminum
industry performance is annually monitored and measured, based on 22 performance
indicators.
