The aluminum industry is an important discharger of two PFCs worldwide tetrafluormethane (CF4) e hexafluorethane (C2F6). The International Aluminium Institute -IAI- considers it fundamental for the sustainable development of the industry to reduce these emissions. By doing so, the industry contributes for the fight against the hothouse gases effect and for the increase of its own production efficiency.

The IAI established as guidelines the reduction of the emission of PFCs in the production of primary aluminum, by investing in modern technologies; it also recommends to maximize aluminum recycling, a process that issues a much smaller amount of hothouse gases, if compared to the primary aluminum industry. Another solution is the encouragement of the use of aluminum in the transportation industry, to reduce the weight of vehicles, and, therefore, the emission of gases by cars.
